Research Paper -- How to Get Started

One of the biggest stresses for college students is the writing assignment, whether it is an essay, research project or a thesis. So you have just been assigned a big writing assignment and have no idea on how to get started and what makes a great paper. A few simple strategies will help you get started on your research paper and make the whole project go more smoothly.

The first action most students will take is to Google their topic. This is a mistake for a number of reasons, most importantly the useless results you will receive will be a waste of time . The first thing you need to do is to decide on your angle. Say your assignment is "What effect do abortions have on the country?" Do you explore this from its political, health, historical, social, feminist, religious or even economic perspective? If the paper is five pages or less choose one angle and stick to the topic, but for a more in depth paper you could explore how these things interact.

Now that you decided on a perspective for your research paper it is time to start collecting information related to the assignment. To avoid wasting time with unrelated or worst questionable sources you need to limit your searches to government and educational sources as well as peer reviewed journals.

Even if you wisely timed your research to the above sources be sure to evaluate each one. First, is the source timely. Many universities and governments have been around for over a hundred years and you do not want these unless you are doing a historical perceptive that quotes research predating germ theory. Does the researcher have an agenda? Abortion Research from a catholic college and liberal college may both have strong biases. This does not mean their work should be dismissed out of hand, but examined more closely.

After you have gathered ample source material it is time to start writing. Start with a paragraph that explains the topic of your research paper and outlines the points your wish to make. This will serve as your out line with the body paragraphs explaining and supporting points in this paragraph. Do not obsess if this paragraph is not perfect as this is a living document and will change many times until you turn it in.

Now it is time to start writing the body of the research paper. Go point by point from your introductory paragraph. It is best to site and quote two sources for each point. Your can even explain and compare contradictory data and viewpoints. This is a great way to maintain your own objectivity as the author.

Now it is time to let the paper rest. When your first write a paper it is impossible to read it without reading what you meant to write. After a good nights sleep give the paper a fresh read from top to bottom. Is the research paper clear? Does it make a point? Do you need to add or subtract information to cover your topic more completely? After answering those questions it is time to revise your document.

When you are satisfied with your research paper it is time to have it proofread. You want three things from a proofreader. First, is the grammar and spelling perfect. Second, the proofreader should check if it is readable and that all of the ideas are complete. And finally the proofreader needs to be brutally honest as the person grading the paper will be.

One final tip to writing a paper in a reasonable amount of time you need to find your voice. Have a conversation with yourself. The first draft should just flow out with total disregard to style and grammar. Once you have enough material written it is easy to rewrite and or revise your research paper. Good luck on your assignment.

Growing up students’ motivation in learning English through any useful activities

One basic aspect in learning foreign language, in this case is English, must be kept by foreign language learners, our students, since it has become an important role for learning and knowing it more. It is a motivation. This word is used to explain how far our students commit to learn English and be success or failure in studying English. The discussion among linguists had been done since it is debatable. It is divided into two categories namely intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The concept of motivation has been discussed and formulated by three different perspectives of behaviorist, cognitive and constructivist. It is a key, to make students success or not in studying English, enjoy learning English, doing, and finishing English task given by teacher. In Indonesia, as we all know, students learn English when they study at primary school, junior high school, and senior high school. They study English years by years, however, we often hear that they say English is difficult. This problem is caused by first, they are passive student. It means that they want to study because of the curriculum without any eagerness. Second, they don’t know clearly about its function and benefit for their future.

This non research paper discusses about the way how to increase our students’ motivation through any useful activities. By doing interesting and useful activities they feel better to learn English. Their motivation increases because they learn and apply English in a reality. Those activities are being a member of any social networking online, writing a letter or postcard to an institution, visiting foreign embassy (U.K, U.S.A, Australia etc), talking to native speaker at school, translating and interpreting selected poplar song, short story, drama, poem, and novel and doing extensive reading.

Key words: motivation, learning English

Formatting a Research Paper

The following points should be kept in mind while formatting a research paper:

PAPER: you should try to use clean and good quality white paper which should measure around 8 1/2" x 11", and the printing should be done on one side only.

MARGINS: the paper should have margins of about 1" inch each from all sides. The only exception is the page number which should be placed half an inch from the top right corner.

TITLE PAGE: usually a title page is not required while writing a research paper, unless of course your teacher has asked you to include. If you decide not to include a title page, you can start your paper one inch from the top of the 1st page with your name against the left side margin. After you have written down your name, in the same format on a separate line comes the name of your teacher, followed by the course code and the date respectively. Care should be taken not to type the title completely in capital letters, not to put quotation marks on either side of the title, and finally not to underline the title of your research paper.

NUMBERING OF PAGES: the pages of your research paper should be numbered consecutively on the upper right hand corner, and aligned with the right side margin half an inch from the top. LINE SPACING: the entire essay must be double spaced between the lines, it doesn’t matter if its handwritten or printed, all the lines should have double spacing and a one inch margin on all the sides so that the teacher can write comments.

WORDS SPACING: it is standard to leave 1 space between words, every comma, semi-colon, or colon.

INDENTATION: if you are handing over a typewritten paper, then indent about half and inch at the start of each paragraph. Quotations should be indented one inch from the left hand side margin. If you are not required to do any indenting, each paragraph should start flush to the left margin.

RIGHT JUSTIFICATION: if you use a word processor to type your essay, don’t right justify your essay and also do not format the hyphens automatically. The hyphens should be typed in you, and the entire essay should either be left justified or justified depending on what the requirement is.

USE OF BOOKS, MAGAZINES, and NEWSPAPERS: the titles of all the books, plays, novels that you have used in your research paper, should be underlined. On the other hand, titles of newspapers, journals, magazines should be put in quotation marks if they have been referred to in your research paper.

CAPITAL LETTERS: even though writing in capital letters might save time and effort for you, the entire essay should not by typed in capital letters. They should only be used for headings, start of sentences, or if there is a grammatical need to do so.

TABLE OF CONTENTS: usually a short research paper does not need a Table of Contents. However, if the research paper written by you is extremely long, it is advisable to use a table of contents which shows the page numbers where each section begins. The suggested order for the table of contents of a long research paper is: Acknowledgements, Foreword, Introduction, Body, Conclusion, Appendices, Glossary, Endnotes, and Bibliography.

END: there is no need to use any special word, symbol or a phrase to end your essay. The only thing required is simply a period at the end of the last sentence of your research paper.

KEEPING ESSAY TOGETHER: the different pages of the research paper should be stapled at the upper left corner. Care should be taken not to use a pin or to fold the paper, the paper should also not be handed over in a binder or a folder, and giving loose sheets is unacceptable.
